Sanitize means “to clean” and refers to conditions that are orderly, free of sewage, and offering clean drinking water.

Sterilize means “to make hostile to, and free of bacteria.”

Water may be sanitary, having no sewage in it, but it still contains bacteria, including beneficial becteria, so it is not sterile.

One can wash their hands in sanitary water with disinfectant soaps to sterilize their hands before handling and preparing food or performing surgery.

One should sanitize an area and then disinfect it for it to be sterilized.
