What is the fascination with Dogs and people’s ears?

315 viewsOther

As someone who regularly interacts with dogs, through volunteer work, I have noticed that a considerable number of those that I interact with, have a fascination with wanting to lick the area around people’s ears, and occasionally, inside them.

It seems to be a repeated thing, not just with shelter dogs, but with those whom I interact in public with too. So is there a reason dogs seem to enjoy licking human ears? I am not aware of anything which could lead them to do this, and even the people I volunteer with, are stumped too.

“If your dog licks your ears, they may be signalling a high level of comfort. Mutual grooming is common among pack members, and you may be perceived as just one of the pack. Licking your ears may also be a sign of love, care and respect. In other words, when your dog licks your ears, they’re complimenting you!”

My dog will give me ear licks occasionally. Nowhere else, just the ears. It’s his way of saying “I am super happy to see you and that you are here”.

I’ve never had a dog do this to me. Something about your particular ears?

My dog likes licking my cat’s ears on the rare occasions she lets her. Doesn’t go after mine though. Those cat ears must hit that much better.
