What is the paradox of abundance?

I’m taking a college biology course to satisfy the science credit I need to graduate and we learned this phrase in a simulation in my lab class yesterday. The professor didn’t explain it well because we were short on time, so can someone explain to me how this works?

If you have a lot of something, you’ll use more and more until you no longer truly have a lot of it
