What is the psychology behind defiance? What survival aspect could this have stemmed from?

It helps to create your own social groups after living with your parents. Its common for kids to want to branch out from their parents and to question their ways. This can lead to a power struggle in any situation at that point and if you leave an animal with little power and if they feel like the only thing they can choose for themselves to do is say no, they’re going to say no. Parents and people that work with children a lot fin this out real quick. Defiance is not inherently bad. If someone wants you to do something that is bad then defying them is good.
Defiance ensures the strongest get to breed.
If you are part of a pack of animals and the alpha male isn’t defied or challenged, what could be a stronger male wouldn’t become alpha and not pass on stronger genes.
