What is the purpose of the eyes iris and why does it’s colour vary among individuals?

As someone with light blue eyes, I can definitely agree that I adjust better (faster and I can make out more details) in the dark than my friends with brown eyes. As for light, even if the sun is behind clouds, it’s still sometimes too bright and hurts my eyes to look straight ahead at eye level so I squint or look down. (Snow in the winter is even worse because it reflects the light so I can’t even look down).
