What is the root cause of genetic immunodeficiency?

If the immune system is a cake, genes are the recipe. That recipe can be flawed, either because you inherited a flawed recipe from your parents, or there was an error when copying it down. It could leave out a step/ingredient, or add in one that’s not supposed to be there. Everyone with a flawed recipe will bake a flawed cake, but those cakes will be flawed in different ways. One person will leave out the flour. Another won’t turn on the oven. Someone else might add broccoli to the batter. All “genetic immunodeficiency” says is that a person’s recipe for an immune system doesn’t work right, but the exact nature of the failure can be very different from person to person.
