What is the science behind snorting a drug like coke?

Ex-drug user here! So, I was always told that snorting the drug is always a better, faster, way to get high (compared to orally using the drug). What’s going on biologically here? Also, why don’t they prescribe medicines nasally if the drug absorbs into your system better or faster?

This is only true for drugs that are readily soluble through mucous membranes. But, basically the drug diffuses across the mucous membrane where it then enters the blood stream. For readily soluble drugs, this happens rather quickly. However it can also damage the membrane, and is also pretty socially stigmatized. Some medications do actually use this method, but as a nasal spray rather than a powder that you snort.
