What is the significance of the elections for European Parliament?

2.92K views

There are several news articles talking about how there will likely be changes in the party makeup of the European Parliament, with centrists losing seats to parties on the left and right. What do these changes mean for Europe? Does the European Parliament have powers similar to the US Congress? Or is it more of a symbolic political body with not as much power?

The EU Parliament is just like the US House, for EU wide laws. Their is also a Council that’s sorta like the US Senate, one-country-one-vote.

EU countries can have their own laws, but talk to folks in DC about the awesomeness of passing laws and having Congress overrule them. The EU concept of “ever more unified” makes national laws less important every year.
