As far as I know quarry lakes are created over time as rainwater fills the quarry over years. What keeps an open quarry from getting filled the same way when it rains?

I work in a quarry our water is pumped through ditches and it sits in a settling pond and then we pump it up into a near by lake on property . Our quarry still floods alot in spring and heavy rain tho. The lake the water is pumped into is also an old quarry hole that has filled with water .
