Negative ions in the air abound outdoors and especially near flowing water & on breezy/windy days. Research “negative ions,” they’re a huge contributor to that “fresh air” feeling.

Being outside. Sometimes the circulation is shit ndoors. It gets muggy and uncomfortable. But having said that. I believe the phrase is used to imply ; I need to be alone to think . Just like ” I need to see a man about a horse ” is used when abruptly leaving, usually to go to bathroom, but always to avoiding giving specifics

The change in composition of the air. Air is O2, CO2, N2, etc. Fresh air likely has more oxygen in it – from trees, ocean and other organisms cleaning it.
