It exposes you to ideas you wouldn’t normally.
It allows you to experements with thinking in diffrent ways that you would be able to.
The more you do it the more practice you have the better you are at it.
Some books contain valuable and useful information.
Further in the way of the American diet what else would you be doing with your time? If you are just gonna watch some TV it is probably going to be healthier in the long run to read a good book

However there are both good tv shows and bad books. so it can hit or miss.

Ideally it would help a person become better educated, more thoughtful and happier.

You can travel in space and time with books. Reading improves thinking. The English language is the largest language in all history…there are lots of ways to use it to transmit information or just create gorgeous prose.

The experience and knowledge you can get from books is cheaper than similar knowledge gained from trial and error in the real world, which is sometimes ridiculously expensive.

Wherever this isn’t true, books aren’t so important.
