Typically it’s soil that has poor organic material matter, usually lack of water and organic matter that makes it happen.

So if we were to somehow get animals and plant life to move there slowly, the more stuff that dies and poops on the soil, the more nutrients that grow and may eventually generate better soil overtime. There will still be sand but under all the good shit.

Usually a lack of rain and/or overgrazing. If it’s overgrazing than simply reducing the grazing can reverse the situation. I say simply, but the people herding the animals need another way to make a living. That’s where it can get complicated.

If it’s lack of rain, then some things can be done. Planting with less water hungry vegetation can help. Building terraces to prevent what little rain there is from running off can help.

There’s no one size fits all solution, but there are things we can do.
