What makes the moon partially black for instance when we see a half or crescent moon

The same thing that makes night on earth. Only half of the moon is lit up from the sun. Depending where we are, the moon is, and the sun is, we get different phases.

(I usually show this with a demonstration in the dark with a kid as the sun with a flashlight shining at a kid as the earth walking around them and I move around the earth kid with a foam ball of the moon and show how the phases work with how the sun kid is lighting up the foam moon and how the earth kid sees all the phases. It’s really hard to explain over text though )

The black part is the shadow of the earth.

Remember that the moon does not generate its own light, it’s reflected light from the sun
