Neither of the current two comments are entirely correct. They only have half the picture.

If the snap were entirely from your finger slapping against your palm, you could make a similar snap by opening all your fingers and just snapping the one finger, but it doesn’t work like that.

A lot of the sound from a snap comes from [how the shape of your hand directs and amplifies sound](https://youtu.be/wdER__ZSmHg), almost like the bell of a horn. How that air in your hand is displaced by the movement from your finger has more to an effect than the actual impact itself.
