It’s a product of unions fighting against big businesses back during the industrial revolution. Back in the day companies mandated people to work 10, 12, hell 16hr days, and if someone didn’t come in to work due to sickness, family trouble, or whatever they were fired and subsequently left homeless. Wages were also shit back then, because there were no regulations on what companies had to pay their employees. For years unions fought for better working conditions utilizing strikes, mainly, to force these companies to come to the table. Once essential products like coal, steel, etc started to get affected by the strikes, the government stepped in and brought about regulations that made child labor illegal, established a minimum wage, working hours, etc.

The current typical schedule was hard fought for as shown in the other long comment, but this does not mean it is the optimum.

5 or 6 hour days have been shown to be more focused and productive, leads to far better health and mental health outcomes, and far easier for child rearing duties.

And now work from home options are being fought hard to retain after Covid proved that people can get their work done that way if it appeals to them and further cut out unnecessary commuting and sharing office spaces with mouth breathers.
