A lot of the straight line borders on the Middle East have caused problems ever since. After WW1 the Ottoman Empire was divided up by the Allies, particularly the plan drawn up by Woodrow Wilson. Lines drawn on a map ignored the traditional tribal and nomadic geography. We still live with some of the consequences.
