What’s the difference between a militia and a gang?

It depends where you are and the type of militia, normally it comes down to organisation and official status, in many countries militia are government funded soldiers who don’t have full time status as soldiers, in other countries they are armed populace used by local warlords to enforce policy, in America their status is confused by legal protection and yet no official status, meaning no official body controls them so they are often a law unto themselves.
