What’s the difference between an album and commercial mixtape?

For example, Drake’s 2018 “Scorpion” is a studio album but his 2020 “Dark Lane Demo Tapes” is a commercial mixtape. But why? They’re both just a compilation of songs…

I guess album implies more thought. A more professional, intentionally crafted body of work.

For the drake dark lane demo tapes one, it’s just miscellaneous songs. Songs that were already leaked over internet, songs that were rough drafts etc.

I wouldn’t even say dark lane is a commercial mixtape. It’s just a collection of songs. Mixtape is confusing in the modern streaming era tho.

Streaming is a part of it too. It’s so easy to just release it on streaming platforms, there isn’t much room for unofficial mixtape type places anymore. The mixtape era was when official meant a real CD at hmv or whatever CD stores existed.

btw, i know that in the past a mixtape was for making a name for yourself and not actually for sale. but what’s the difference in the present age?
