Ibuprofen (advil) reduces inflammation while acetominaphen (Tylenol) block the pain signals to the brain.

I had to go look this one up, and it surprised me actually, that according to Wikipedia anyway, the reason Tylenol helps with pain is not fully understood. To quote them:

“Despite its common use, the mechanism of action of paracetamol is not completely understood. (paracetamol is another word for Tylenol)”

Advil is an anti-inflammatory. It works by reducing inflammation in your body, which reduces pain.

Advil is an NSAID and therefore is an anti-inflammatory as well as pain reliever, whereas acetaminophen aka Tylenol is a pain reliever/fever reducer, but lacks the anti-inflammatory properties of Advil.
