What’s the reason behind “Zoom fatigue” aka video call fatigue?

I notice I yawn more too during these calls and immediately feel less cloudy after. Could this be similar to what’s felt during a college lecture?

I think it’s the combination of the mental boredom from sitting thru 8 hours of lectures without changing classrooms and eye strain from computer use for 8 hours.

This could be because you’re simply idle and focused on something other than your breathing. It’s similar to when you’re doing something like watching a movie or playing video games and you forget to blink often, therefore you get dry irritated eyes. In this case you’re just listening to a person ramble on and forget to breathe in enough oxygen for your body to be satisfied. It’s not, because you’re not paying it attention. You yawn and the flow of fresh air to your lungs instantly makes your brain fulfilled.

Lots of reasons but mostly because of poor presentation skills of the host, not knowing how to increase involvement of participants, no segmentation, variation of platfoem or format. Mind you the same can be said for most face-to-face meetings as well.

This is still being studied and isn’t fully understood but one contributor is audio quality. Poor quality audio requires you to put more effort into listening. It requires a hightened level of focus compared with in-person conversation.

That’s not the only reason of course but it’s one of them

Our communication with other people is based on reading their facial expressions, body language, etc.
Through the camera, it’s more difficult. Add to the fact that many times the connection is not flawless, there are delays, we’re worried that the other may not hear us, etc.
It’s like communicating something delicate, through a heavy fog – it’s exhausting!!

I can tell you confidently my boss sugar coating and over explaining fucking everything doesn’t hell. Shut the fuck up and get to the point. And usually it could have just been a fucking email.

I agree with u/foodmusicpiano and u/radabdivin
Also, I think a major factor is that in actual conversations apart from vocals body language helps to convey a message which is absent when it comes to video calls.
Additionally, during a video call people usually can see themselves which makes them grow extremely concious and spend a lot of time and energy in looking perfect which is mentally and physically exhausting.

You don’t move, and you are forced to sit in front of a screen, staring at a person talking about subject you don’t really care about. you are cloudy because you are in the process of falling asleep.

Yawning breaks you off the “im fking bored, sleeping is better than this” cycle. which is why the alertness after yawning is only temperate.
