It is not known to have a use for people but it exists in nearly all mammals and is part of the evolutionary blueprint, so to speak. The philtrum is a narrow groove that may carry dissolved odorants from the rhinarium or nose pad to the vomeronasal organ via ducts inside the mouth. That is, it helps smell/taste. It is obvious on dogs, where it is functional.
