Hangnails happen when the small bits of skin around your nails, especially near the cuticles, dry out and tear. When you bite the edges of your nails, it can disrupt the skin around your nail bed, making it more likely to crack or peel. Biting also weakens the protective barrier of skin, causing it to dry out more easily. Even though you’re not directly messing with the top part of your nails, the stress you’re putting on your nails overall can cause that sensitive skin to “betray” you by drying out and cracking. Keeping your hands moisturized and avoiding biting can help!
