What’s water weight?

When losing weight people say the first few pound are “water weight”. Where is this supposed water store and why would the body store extra water away somewhere?

I like to think about athletes cutting weight to explain water weight. In a lot of sports (I’ll use Mixed Martial Arts as an example), there are weight classes that the fighters have to weigh in at before they are allowed to compete.

If a fighter is over that weight by a few pounds, they can try exercising or sitting in a sauna to sweat out the water in their bodies in order to meet the weight limit. That water was just the normal amount of water bodies carry throughout daily life to survive.
