When a person ‘buys’ an art adoptable, what exactly are they buying?

A poor man’s version of a copyright, in the most basic form. They’re supposed to get exclusive use of the adoptable, so it’s theirs and only theirs, and no one else is usually allowed to have it. So if, say, you buy some custom little wolf creature adoptable, that becomes yours to use however you would like, and no one else should have the *exact* same one. Now, since it’s not exactly a legal process I doubt it normally works that way in reality, but that’s the gist of it.
