when I’m installing programs on a computer what does the “setup wizard” or “installation wizard” actually do?

before the wizards you had to manually type in all the information.

what do you want to do

where is the file located

now you have to find or mount the cd and the hard drive. and tell the pc where it is.

then tell the pc where you will put it.

then you have to find the exe that installs the file and tell it to run.

and stuff like that, before plug and play and install wizards came along almost nothing was automated. you would put a cd or floppy in and nothing happened until you did something.

this is a very basic description but you get the idea.
