When initially working out, why are you getting stronger but not building any visible muscle?

Your muscles are quite strong even if they are not very big. A problem when not using your muscles for heavy lifting is that your nervous system will arange itself to have more dexterity and less strength. Basically the nerves will not connect directly to a big part of your muscle which allows for finer control but makes it hard to get a lot of strength. When you start working out the nerves will grow new connections allowing you to use more of the strength in the muscle. It is possible to measure the strength of a muscle by attaching electrodes and send a strong electric pulse through the muscle. Even trained athletes will not be able to use their full strength but can get very close.
