When looking at something bright or sunny, why does it hurt to have both eyes open but not just one?

I have a five year olds understanding of it so I can explain…. in your eye you have these structures called cones and rods. Low light black and white use rods color and bright light activate cones. The transition form one to the other causes discomfort.
