You only ever use one nostril at a time. This is so that when one gets clogged, you can switch to the other. With a cold, your mucus builds up faster, so it will block the active nostril quicker. That excess mucus causes you to notice when you normally wouldn’t, but you always have a drier and wetter nostril.
