When your throat is sore, it’s usually because it is inflamed and swollen. Your body is trying to fight off some kind of infection and does that by moving blood full of white blood cells to the area. This causing swelling in your tonsils and other parts of your throat, including your vocal folds.

When your vocal folds are swollen, it makes them more difficult to vibrate in the way they should. This makes your voice sound hoarse.
