Where do tree roots move the soil they dig through?

Have you seen sidewalks lifted up in parts or cracked when there’s a nearby tree? Usually the roots have grown and pushed the dirt ‘up’. Once it’s compacted so much, the concrete ends up giving forming the teepee or cracked sidewalk.

(There are other things that can crack sidewalk too, but this is just another of them)
