Where does the water from the waterfall or valley in the mountain come from?

Often it comes from snow.
Snow falls and accumulates on mountain peaks due to the increased elevation.
Some snow melts and becomes runoff.
This can pool into rivers which obviously run downhill.
At some points these will reach a cliff edge, and going over become a waterfall.
