Bruises happen when tiny blood vessels called capillaries break because of some sort of impact. When they break, they leak blood under that part of your skin.

As time passes, and your body starts to heal your bruise, the leaked blood will start turning blue because the hemoglobin – a protein in our red cells – is not receiving oxygen like it was in your blood vessels.

After that, that protein will start to break down, and the bruise will start to get pale green or yellow, until all the left over blood is absorbed and the bruise is healed.

Because they’re caused by tiny blood vessels (capillaries) breaking – what you’re seeing is your actual blood spreading beneath your skin, resulting in the bluish-purplish appearance of bruises when seen from the surface.
