Why are kids easily disturbed by noise in bed at home but not in the car?

As a parent I always had my kids fall asleep to music or the TV in another room of course. This way if I had company over I never needed to worry about waking them up. Now they’ll sleep through a tornado.

Sleeping people aren’t disturbed by noise so much as changes in their environment. If someone falls asleep in a quiet room, then noise will often wake them up. But if someone falls asleep in a room with a loud TV on, they will often wake up when the TV is turned OFF. Their brain is simply noticing that something is changing and it might be worthwhile to check it out.

When you are riding in a car it’s just constantly bumpy and loud and that never really changes, so there’s no reason to wake up.

In a car, we expect a certain amount of unanticipated noise. In bed, we assume there to be little to no noise (or at least only noises we are familiar with)
