why are most utility pole’s metal? Wouldn’t that be a bad idea because of their conductivity in a storm?

Depends on the utility pole. Some are wood. The different materials have different advantages. If lightning strikes a wooden pole, it wouldn’t fare very well.
Most electrical pylons are metal, though. They have to hold a lot of weight.
it’s actually important for the energy from a lightning strike to be directed away from electrical equipment, were a utility pole to ever be hit. A metal utility pole/pylon does this by acting as a conductor to ground. Wooden poles have grounding cables that run the length of the pole.
