Why are old memories randomly present again?

At home we have multiple cupboards. One day we moved the plates from one cupboard to another. They are in the new cupboard for some time now. And I normally walk to the new cupboard. However today I walked to the old cupboard I only noticed that it was the wrong one as I opened it and saw the contents.

Our minds remember much more than we can actively recall. It makes connections from one memory to another using all of our senses. This is why when you smell something familiar it can “bring you back” to a moment in time. This same tactic can be used when you get up to do something and immediately forget so you backup and redo the same actions and magically you remember.

My assumption is that it was the actions you did leading up to opening the old cupboard that drove you to look there. It could have been anything that may have been picked up by your senses and triggered that memory.
