Why are people taken off of life support? What are the downsides for extended use for prolonged life?

Usually this is someone who is not and never expected to have conscious thoughts again.
Hypothetically you can be still alive if they keep your lungs and heart pumping and feed you through a tube but you wont be you or be anyone just a husk of a body.
