Why are some cars, like muscle cars, so much louder than others?

So the exhaust system of a car might be modified. The way this is done is by replacing it with a larger, straighter pipe for faster airflow, and thus a more efficient engine. it also has to do with resonance, length of the pipes and also if there’s a muffler installed. Now these things are usually not on stock cause it makes for an uncomfortable ride (i.e. people hate engine noise) and also they don’t really need the benefits of a free flowing exhaust system. one way car companies are now getting around this is by installing speakers playing fake engine noise in some performance cars.
