Because the concept of ‘contact’ between objects relies on the electromagnetic force, specifically the resistance between two electrons as they approach each other.

The electromagnetic force is the reason you don’t fall through the surface of the earth for example because the electrons on the surface of the ground push against the electrons on the surface of your feet.

Without the electromagnetic force, the whole universe would be a formless, dark space where nothing would be able to clump together.

In fact, that’s exactly what dark mater most likely is, a kind of matter that can’t feel the electromagnetic force.
