Why do your body parts have different names when they are all connected?

It’s kind of like roads. Basically all the roads in a city are connected. But that doesn’t make them all the same road, because the whole idea of giving a particular road a name is to be able to describe where you are or what route you might take to get somewhere. It also lets you distinguish between different kinds of roads..dirt roads, highways, etc. If all connected roads were the same road, you wouldn’t be able to talk about directions and addresses very easily. Likewise the different oceans are named different things (as are the seas and bays and gulfs etc) because it lets people talk about where they are on the world more effectively.

The names names for “different oceans” are really just names for different **parts** of the ocean. These names are just a convenience. Of course there is only one actual ocean, but different parts of the ocean are closer to some countries than other parts of the ocean, and so it’s useful to name these different parts differently, so that we know where in the world we are talking about.
