why are there different sized batteries (aaa-D, etc) if they all put out the same 1.5v?

Boom box things ,nightmare to put batteries in ..being as there were between 4 – 8 they would fly out as you tried to squeeze them and slap the battery flap on ..
They would go flat slowly ..that caused the tape to go screwy …🤦♂️
