Why are there mirrors that from the inside you can’t see the outside, but from the outside you can see the inside?

If your asking how they work, they work because they have many tiny pieces of metal integrated in the glass that reflect light and also on one side of the window, the environment is darker. You can experiment with this by waiting until night time and turning on your room light and looking out of the window. It’s will be difficult for you to see outside, but very easy for people to see inside

since you’re asking “why…” and so far the responses are more along the lines of “how…”:

because sometimes you have situations where you dont want the people on one side see the ones on the other side.

this is the case for:

– the police (if they interview someone and want the victim to get a look on that suspect for example)

– clinical/product studies (the participants behave differently if they see the observers)

– pretty much any company that has groundlevel-offices and doesnt want passersby to just see what their employees are working on.

and tons of other situations

These are called two way mirrors. There is actually nothing special about it as it is just a simple pane of glass. When light hits the glass about half of it is reflected and half of it passes through. But if you make sure that there is only light on one side of the glass there will be no light to pass through the glass from that side. This allows the people inside the room to look out but the people outside will just see their own reflection.
