Why are toenails considerably thicker or stronger than the nails on our fingers?

I do know that my children’s pediatrician explained to me that a baby’s nails are so thin because you continually grow another layer of the keratin to your nails; don’t recall the rate she said layers add, would assume it varies as much as nail growth itself varies person to person. Which is why they get harder and denser as you age, layers are always added. I don’t know why the difference between fingernails versus toenails happens but thought that was interesting information about nails in general.
