The rear windshield defrosters seem so much more effective. Is it just the lines across the drivers field of view that makes it decidedly unsafe?

They do. I had a 2018 Ford Kuga (Escape) that had it. It was marvelous. It would defrost my front window in less than 2 mins. The wires are hair thin and lay vertically about a quarter inch (.5 cm) apart. Most people didn’t notice until I told then.. Then you can’t unsee it.
