Why can’t we go to sleep on demand like how we are controlling other parts of the body?

We can stop breathing when we want to. We can also “tell” our body to do what we want such as moving, holding, typing, etc. So why can’t we just “tell” our brain to go to sleep immediately instead of having to wait for it to fall asleep.

Maybe too many people killed themselves sleeping on command, and that selection got selected out by natural selection. It makes sense that we have a “warning system” just before we go to sleep, like we generally want to be in a comfortable, quiet, warm, safe place before we sleep.

Stopping our breathing on command may have uses, like when we want to stay perfectly still without being heard, or when we go under water or something.

There are many body functions we cannot control. You can stop breathing for a few seconds but you can’t hold your breath long enough to die no matter how hard you try. You can’t control your digestion or your heartbeat, and most other basic functions are also unavailable to you. Sleep seems to be one such basic function that your body won’t let you interfere with, probably because for a long time, it was a question of life or death: fall asleep in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you might get eaten.

For the same reason that, even though I’m capable of running 20mph, I can’t start running at that speed instantly. Similar to how there is a time lag to reach my top speed there is one for your physiological processes to ramp down to reach deep sleep state

You can not control it, but you can condition yourself to sleep when you want to it just has to be the same everyday. I used to work somewhere that was very close to my apartment so instead of going out to eat for my hour break i would literally go home get a bite to eat and take a 30 minute nap. After like a week of doing this, i would sit in my recliner and almost instanly fall asleep.
