Why can’t we solve the mouse over population problem with genetic engineering like mosquitoes?

Worldwide but especially so in Australia is being plagued by insane amounts of mice causing huge amounts of damage. Scientists are able to release genetically engineered mosquitos to help combat their overpopulation, why is it that the same can’t be done for the mice? It seems like most if not all conventional methods of solving this problem are ineffective only because of the sheer number of the mice.

It’s easier with mosquitoes because they’re monogamous. If you release an infertile male mosquito, it’ll stop a female mosquito from laying viable eggs.

If you release an infertile male mouse, you just have one more mouse.
