Why did the Nintendo GameCube have 2 memory card slots? What was it needed for? Most games didn’t properly support it anyway.

To copy a save from one to the other. Also some games have functionality for two memory cards, such as loading characters from both to play as, that kind of thing. But the ability to copy saves is the main reason.
