Why did the world stop using ‘Ma’am and Sir’ when addressing people?

In the UK it’s mostly gone because it came about from class hierarchy, which all but the old money aristocracy is trying to move away from.

I’m all for it. Much like I’m all for companies not having formal dress codes for non-customer facing positions. Formality where it isn’t needed just feels forced and unnecessary.
