The Prince of Wales is a special title reserved for the direct male heir to the throne. His consort is the Princess of Wales. The other sons and grandsons of the monarch are just plain old Princes. But they are Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex (for now), so their wives are Duchesses. Once one of them becomes the Prince of Wales, his wife will be a Princess.

Princess Diana was wildly popular, and the tragic image that has been invented for her casts Camilla as the villain who caused Charles to spurn her. Camilla is the Princess of Wales but forgoes the title out of deference and political pragmatism.
