Why do banks require my carrier information to send text alerts.

Shouldn’t just a phone number be enough?

Banks and other companies that send a lot of texts are going to have bulk messaging arrangements with the carriers (or arrangements with a company that has arrangements with the carrier, etc.). They batch up all the messages they want to send and all the numbers to send them to and transfer them to the carrier to send out. They need your carrier so they know which batch to send your messages out with.

Your cell phone number has the equivalent of an email address so that companies can send you a “text” in the form of an email. This email address is your phone number @ carrier domain.
