Why do buildings in old photographs look much larger than in modern photos?

Agreed, it’s kind of a vague question. But one explanation would be that many photos today are taken on cell phones with use a wide lens (in contrast to a zoom lens). The wide lens distorts the image making things near the edge of the picture seem further away.
